October 18, 2014 Minutes

October's meeting began with the Pledge, Dave Doherty presiding.

Don was on a cemetery tour with the Botanical Garden so Dave gave the Treasurer's report, including checking and savings balances.

Bill's doing bright-work on a Challenger and would probably rather be here.

We approved last month's minutes.

Randy and Michelle Scroeder came to visit. They're the recent RV-12 buyers. Right now the project takes up half of their garage, and Michelle is encouraging Randy to finish it quickly so she can get her car back under cover.

Cary and Dale Fletcher are also visiting, Cary flies a Rans Coyote based at Spirit.

Lee Lawson is a member from long ago who hasn't visited in a while. He hasn't been active for about 12 years and currently works as a Stress analyst with Boeing in St. Charles. He's jumping back in now, having visited Rans, Zenith, and a recent airport event in Illinois.

Bob Kraemer just got back from visiting a number of D-Day sites in France, and then crossed the channel to Scotland. He got to see a many preserved WWII aircraft including a Bristol Beaufighter, a B-26, and a DC-3 painted in invasion stripes, and also got to tour a Concorde.

We cancelled our last Young Eagles event of the year due to dire weather forecasts and scheduling concerns. Rick reports 158 kids flown this year over 108 flights. So far the YE program as a whole has flown around 1.9 million. We'll start up again in April 2015, second Saturday of the month. Dave Doherty mentioned an accident near Buffalo, New York that resulted in 2 fatalities. It emphasizes the need for vigilance. We discussed radio communications, namely broadcasting your position, versus the problem of too much communication: monopolizing the radio and not looking around.

Fresh water update: the airport is rehabbing the main building and is putting in a new well. The well will be close to the pole to the southeast of the ARC. We'll get to tap into treated fresh water, though we'll need to dig a trench from the administration building to ours. Installing the actual line will be done by plumbers so it can be approved by the city. A contractor will dig the trench, this makes sense as it needs to be fairly deep to avoid freezing. The existing well needs to be shut down, DNR has requirements for how this must be done to avoid contaminating the aquifer. We also need to consider flushing our existing pipes. Dave asked for a motion to allow the executive committee leeway to spend money on the project. Motion was approved and seconded. Membership voted and approved.

We're looking at a Corvair engine and instruments for the Fly Baby.

Dave's still playing phone tag with Rod Hightower about his RV-12 project.

Friday, December 12, will be our annual Holiday banquet. We'll send invitations by mail, $25 per person. Alan Frazier will give the presentation.

On 11/8 there's an aviation trivia night at CBC. If anybody's interested in being a member of our group let Dave Doherty know.

10/25 is the Smartt Field Open House, including the annual pumpkin drop. CAF will be open and selling rides on the B-25 or TBM. We'll have an ARC open house as well and sell food. We need some volunteers from around 9 am on and would like to have some airplanes parked outside. We'll add to the security detail as well: last year we had people walking around randomly. We'd like to get the floors cleaned up before the Open House, bathrooms, and bugs on the floors in the conference room. Dave will be out Friday working on this if you'd like to help. Note that the movie is also on the 25th. Dave mistakenly advertised the 27th, looking at the December calendar page. The movie will be The Hunters.

Dave brought an old TV to replace the dead one in the conference room.

Today is election day for President and Secretary. Dave passed out ballots and will include a ballot in the next newsletter.

Chubb Wheeler is 103, he flew DC-3's in WWII and instructed in Stearmans. Bob Kraemer mentioned a barbecue at the St. Louis Air and Space museum 10/19 at Parks at noon.

Ron has food coupons, Dierberg's and Shop & Save.

Jim Hann is trying to get his airplane wings painted and wants to know of paint booths that support water-based. Jim also told us about some Canadian airplane museums he's had the chance to visit.

Dave asked what we'd like to do next year as a chapter. Jim suggested that we have another camping compound . Rick suggests we be more proactive on Young Eagles participation and stronger recruiting new members.

The Hangar 7 lock is waiting on a locksmith.

Life memberships are $450. We've approved funds for jackets for existing members.

Motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.

September 20, 2014 Minutes

September's meeting began with the Pledge, Dave Doherty presiding.

We began by approving last month's minutes.

Visitors included Terry Patton, visiting with his wife Jessica, and sons Garret and Conner. (Another son, Aiden, was at a sleep-over.) They attended last week's YE event with a their sons and a group of friends for a birthday party. Terry has a long-standing interest in aviation and his wife suggested getting involved. Jerry Davey has been a national member for a while and has decided to get involved in a local chapter.

Don gave the Treasurer's report including checking and savings balances.

Christmas bash is coming up 12/12 at the All Occasion Banquet Center. (Same place as last year.)

Last Saturday we flew 50 kids at our Young Eagles event with lots of pilots. So far we've only flown 159, not much fewer than last year. We had one event that was a washout and a few with sparse attendance. Rick will be away for our October event. Jackie Melugan will handle attendance. Taylor, Jackie's daughter, attended the academy and got to see Oshkosh. At 17 she's jumped in with both feet, has already gotten her 3rd class medical, and will start flight training soon.

Terry Patton had not yet heard of the annual Oshkosh convention, so we gave him and his family an overview. Ron Wright also let them know about Sun & Fun, "a laid back Oshkosh in Florida."

Elections are coming up next month for president and secretary. We have a candidate for each one: Dave Doherty and Dave Deweese respectively.

Hubert Looney bought the single wheel tug. Ron and Hubert spent a lot of time getting it running.

We've got the Fly Baby plan revisions and are inventorying to find what we do and don't have.

The airport has achieved all the permits and funding necessary to dig a well and run clean water into the administration building. We'll tap into this and run it to the ARC, and will need to pay for the pipe from there to here. The well will be near us, and the airport asked if we'd be willing to change our lease, at which point Dave was able to negotiate the tee at the administration building. Since they'll be digging a ditch we could put in our pipe at the same time.

Concerning leases, Ron Wright mentioned getting official claim on the tie downs near the ARC, so that we can get the income.

September 27 we'll show the original, Jimmy Steward Flight of the Phoenix for our monthly movie.

On October 11, the same day as our YE event, there will be a bike event. A part of the ramp will be roped off so that riders can pass through the airport. We'll need to monitor this space.

On the 4th Saturday of October is the annual St. Charles Flying Service Pumpkin Drop. We'll cook and sell food, and park some of our aircraft on the ramp for display.

Jim Bower had a hard drive crash and is rebuilding the roster. Let him know if you didn't get your mailed copy of the newsletter. (Or let him know if you don't need the paper copy; everyone with an email address receives the electronic version.)

Jeff's working on new member packets, we're also getting new t-shirts printed. We made a motion and seconded to provide jackets for lifetime members. We've awarded a few already to long-time members who've made significant contributions to the chapter. Dave will contact all our current lifetime members to get jacket sizes. Ron Wrights suggested a payment plan for the membership.

Bill Doherty had the food cards this month in Ron's absence.

July 2014 Minutes

July's meeting began with the Pledge, Dave Doherty presiding.

Our guest speaker had another engagement, so no presentation will follow.

Don Doherty gave the Treasurer's report, including checking and savings account balances.

We got a price break for shirts, so we bought a new batch. Dave recalled the early days of the chapter when we debated on the logo. Al Lowe's son eventually drew it up with the Spirit of St. Louis flying past the Arch, rather than through it. He found a local firm, Tiny Little Monster, who made the shirts up for a good price, and will get a quote from them for the lifetime members' jackets.

Bob Murray, potential member and visitor was present. He has no plane, but a private pilot's license from way back.

Last week was our monthly Young Eagles event. Rick May reported that we flew 52 kids. Jeff Stephensen, Don Jonas, Ron Burnett, Dave Doherty and Joe Sargent all flew kids. So far this year we've flow 105 in 71 flights. If you're doing this on your own make sure you get new registration forms (dated 2013 or later) from Rick. Next event is August 10. Hunter Malugen recently attended the Air Academy and had a good time. Ron Burnett mentioned Dominic Darst, a boy he's flown twice, and Jeff has flown once, told him he wants to become an airline pilot.

Election for president and secretary. We need a committee to decide who the candidates will be. (Not too tough of a job when both incumbents plan to continue.)

The KR-2 Ron Wright found is still in a chapter hangar. We're hoping to salvage some parts for the Fly Baby.

Art Zemon donated a single-wheel tug. We have a few interested parties and may sell to the highest bidder. Ron Wright says they can go for a couple thousand dollars.

Jeff set up a Friday night date for the holiday banquet. All Saturdays are booked. He tentatively booked it for 12/12 pending feedback from the chapter.

Airventure's coming up at the end of the month. Dave and Jeff flew up last week to stake out a campsite. Typically we have a chapter picture taken, at what this year is called the "Pathway Pavilion." Gale mentioned getting together Thursday at Paul's Mustang. Dave Doherty proposes 11 a.m. He'll post this on the Yahoo board.

Don Jonas mentioned the Cessna 170 club's having a fly-in at Creve Coeur. They're doing a Poker Run, and suggested that we act as a stop for a future, similar event.

September 20 is the CAF Hangar Dance. October 11 a cystic fibrosis bike tour will stop at the airport. This is also a Young Eagles day. October 25 is the airport open house and annual pumpkin drop. We'll have a food concession at the ARC and will display aircraft and open the ARC.

The Thunderbirds will be there with other acts.

Rod Hightower called Dave to ask if the chapter was interested in his RV-12 project. Dave has replied in the affirmative and is awaiting further communications.

We're in the process of setting up a fabric covering workshop and are looking for someone with experience.

Next month, Alan Frasier, a McDonnell Douglas test pilot will be our guest speaker.

Dave would like to see newsletter articles from other members. Feel free to send submissions to Jim Bower.

Rob Burnett has food coupons available for Shop & Save and Dierberg's.

Dave Domeier finished his RV-8 and flew it in to the meeting. He has about 19 hours and 53 landings. "Most of them decent." He reports that this is his first tailwheel aircraft.

Motion made and seconded to adjourn the meeting.

June 21, 2014 Meeting Minutes

Our June meeting began with the Pledge, Dave Doherty presiding.

We approved last month's minutes as written.

Don Doherty gave the Treasurer's report, including checking and savings balances. We got a check for the B-17 stop.

June 14 was our last Young Eagles event. We flew 26 kids.

There was a discussion about a KR2 project with a Corvair engine. It's pretty rough but has quite a few parts that would be useful on the Fly Baby, and Dave proposed doing this. Ron Wright says that most of the damage is cosmetic and he'd like to take a good look at the plane, but feels this is the way to go. In the meantime we'll need to store it.

Don is looking for a machine shop to complete sectioning our display engine.

President and Secretary positions are up for election in October.

We need a chairperson for our holiday dinner. The 21st is open at the St. Charles Banquet Center. Dave had proposed the 6th but has not heard back yet. Jeff Stephenson volunteered, and Bob Kramer says he can arrange a speaker if the 6th is open.

Several people noticed the Waco/Great Lakes fly-in at Creve Coeur. The Zenith open house is going on today in Mexico, Missouri.

Dave is looking for workshop topics. There's interest in seeing some fabric covering.

Art has a refrigerator and a single-wheel powered tug that he offered to donate to the chapter.

Next month is Oshkosh. We will have a meeting. Mark Irvin with FAA ATC will give a presentation on flying into AirVenture from the controller's perspective.

Alan Frazier, a former McDonnell test pilot, will be with us in August.

Vince donated a full set of the Sportsman Pilot magazine.

The meeting closed, followed by a presentation about aviation medicals by Dr. Matt Miriani.

February 15, 2014, Meeting Minutes

February's meeting began with the Pledge, Bill Doherty presiding. Dave is recovering from a successful surgery.

We moved to accept the minutes from January's meeting.

Don gave the savings and checking balances.

John Tiner, Alan Bane, Paul Vorhees and Brian Kissinger visited today from Chapter 64. They each have a Fly Baby of their own and came to take a look at ours.

Bill briefly covered the BOD meeting. We discussed food costs. Jeff Stephenson will be our new Eagle Flight Coordinator.

Rick covered this year's YE Events Calendar. We'll continue with the 2nd Saturday of the month, April through October. With all the snow so far there's a good chance we could get flood out again and the extra month could be our chance for a make-up date. Rick reminded us about the points that count towards reimbursement for the program. Note that we get credit for a given pilot's flights after flying 10 kids. Rick noted that the program cost our chapter this year due to food costs. We're hoping to get someone to act as a food and beverage director for the chapter, let Rick know if you'd like to volunteer. One of our visitors suggested outsourcing the cooking. We're sending William Frye, who flew with Eve at last year's first event, to Air Academy. His fees are taken care of between points and a donation. We'd also like to send our new member, Hunter. Dave Doherty will take care of a portion of this, we'll need to cover the rest. Motion made, seconded, and passed for this expense.

We took a break before Don's annual financial report, Ron reminded us that he had food cards to sell during intermission.

Don gave a PowerPoint presentation on our 2013 finances. We were down in income versus 2012, though 2012 was an unusual year for various reasons. Expenses were nearly the same. We renegotiated our flight simulator expense, a big hit towards YE, and plan to better manage food costs. Propane price and usage will both be up. We might consider buying in the summer when we'll pay less. Hangar costs are rising, but not by much. We'll need to cut costs or bump up our income in 2014.

After the financials motion was made, seconded, and approved to close the meeting. Afterwards our visiting Fly Baby experts helped us assess our plane.

January 18, 2014 Meeting Minutes

The first meeting of 2014 began with the Pledge, Dave Doherty presiding.

Don Doherty gave the treasurer's report, including checking and savings balances. We're currently pretty solvent, thanks to recent fundraisers and our food coupon program. Ron Burnett was not around but made sure cards were available at the meeting.

Brian Johnston, a new member, attended today. He was at the November meeting and has always been fascinated by aircraft. After learning that aircraft ownership was not as expensive as he thought he's decided to pursue flight training and build a kit.

Chapter 32's recharter needs to be completed this month. Our insurance forms are now online and that will be done in the next few days. HQ also requests a list of members, Jim Bower and Don Doherty are taking care of this.

Our Christmas party was last month. Libby Yunger gave an interesting presentation on Pancho Barnes. Everyone had a good time, though Dave would like to see more participation in the future, maybe a change of venue would help.

Projects for 2014 include converting the Sonerai into an educational exhibit. We've had our Fly Baby for about a year and hope to get it flying. Don fixed up our big compressor in 2013, and we've got a few more changes to make this year.

We're paying rent on our flight simulator. Rick May feels a 6 month lease might work better since we use it for our Young Eagles events. Jeff pointed out that we use it at other events. He also feels that someone who could attend every YE event, show people how to use the simulator correctly, and set some time limits, would be a good addition. We discussed asking Mike out to train some members to perform this role. We also need a new operating manual. Gale points out that we have a certified flight simulator as well, though it doesn't have the impressive, multi-screen display of the one Mike built. Renegotiating the rent to a rent-to-own arrangement was another idea. Jim Hann feels that, though our yearly investment is not trivial, spending the money to attract younger members who gravitate towards simulators is worth it. Jackie Melugin suggested that a grant might be available, considering the fact that we're an educational organization. Motion made and voted on to pursue renegotiation of our flight simulator lease.

New business. We're collecting dues for 2014, get your dues in before a week from today to be on the roster we're sending to Oshkosh. A lifetime membership is now available. Dave's located a source for a nice fleece-lined jacked with our logo embroidered as part of the deal.

We held our elections last month. Most of the officers remained the same, though we've doubled all the salaries. Flight advisor changed from Bill Jagust to Tim Finley. We have an opening for a Member At Large to attend our quarterly board of directors meetings. Tom Crocco volunteered. Our next board meeting is Saturday, 2/1/2014 at high noon.

Our 2/15 meeting will include results of the Board of Directors' meeting plus a financial presentation from Don. We'll continue to have the movie of the month starting with the last Saturday in March, running through October. Dave asked for suggestions. Membership mentioned Planes, 7 Days / 6 Nights, original Flight of the Phoenix, World's Fastest Indian, Avro Aero story, Cloud Dancer.

Paul Poberezny passed last year, and Dave noted how he made social events an important part of EAA. We'd like to go and see a Rascals game. Jim Hann suggested after Memorial Day when most kids are out of school. Jeff S. reminded us that the St. Charles Chill hockey team plays at the Family Arena and the tickets are only around five dollars.

Jim Hann brought in some examples of fabric covering. Dave Doherty would like to see us do some workshops in the coming year. There will be more post-meeting presentations, and we'll try to host another FAA presentation at the ARC.

We're participating in the Missouri Aviation Converence and Trade Show on 1/25 and 1/26 in Maryland Heights. Last year we got a lot of interest and gained a few members. We need volunteers to answer questions and for set-up and take-down. Set-up will start Friday evening, loading up a truck to drive down.

Dave will miss next month's meeting, but of course, has two brothers to act as substitutes.

Jim Hann spoke briefly about his recent building adventures. He's left Alaska and went to KY, also leaving 747's for Airbus 300's. He spent around two month living in a hotel in Louisville. First he finished his online CFI course, then got on to fabric work for his Pacer. Turns out every bit of stitched fabric on the plane needed to be recovered. He's using the Stuart's water-based system, and highly recommends the $20, 10 dvd set that describes the procedure.

May is the Spirit of St. Louis Air Show. We'll be attending and doing some programs and presentations. There's interest in a history of aviation presentation of some kind, likely involving older aircraft. Dave's talking with Oshkosh about what might be available, the Spirit of St. Louis being one idea.

Tom Crocco mentioned a document he received from HQ entitled "Guidelines for Deducting Out-of-Pocket Expenses Incurred in Connection with Volunteering at EAA Headquarters". It's on line at http://eaa.org/news/2014/releases/2013-01-16_memo-to-volunteers.pdf

Ron Wright put up a poster for Sun 'n' Fun, a "laid-back version of Oshkosh". He recommends sunscreen.

Motion to conclude the meeting was made and seconded.
